How do our fire apparatus get their "names"?

Washtenaw County Fire Departments are each assigned an identification number. Scio Township's Fire Department ID number is 16. The first component of the apparatus name identifies the type of apparatus, such as an engine, a ladder truck, or a tanker as examples. Within each department, apparatus assigned to "station 1" is assigned the additional identifier of 1, "station 2" would be assigned an additional identifier 2.  If multiple pieces are assigned to one station, like in Scio Township where we have 1 station and 2 engines, they are assigned identifiers just like they would be assigned stations, 1 and 2.  

Using these three components, we order them by type, department, and identifier to come up with the name. For instance, Scio Township's Engine 1 is called "Engine 16-1".

Engine 16-1:

"Engine 16-1" is a 2017 Rosenbauer pumper and serves as our primary fire engine. Engine 1 responds to fires, car accidents, rescue calls and some EMS calls. 

• Carries 1000 gallons of water
• Can pump 1500 gallons per minute
• Carries majority of our Hurst "Jaws of Life" extrication equipment
• Has 4 seats for firefighters
• Licensed to respond to medical emergencies

Engine 16-2

"Engine 16-2" is a 2010 Rosenbauer pumper and serves as our backup fire engine and is called out on major incidents. 

• Carries 500 gallons of water
• Can pump 1500 gallons per minute
• Carries our reserve Hurst "Jaws of Life" extrication tool
• Has 2 seats for firefighters

Water Tanker 16-1:

"Tanker 16-1" is a 2002 Pierce pumper/tanker which is called out for fires in areas without fire hydrants-which is the majority of Scio Township.

• Carries 2500 gallons of water
• Can pump 1500 gallons per minute
• Has 4 seats for firefighters

Rescue 16-1:

"Rescue 16-1"(the ambulance) is a 2022 Lifeline ambulance on a Ford F-450 chassis. When staffing permits, it is the primary response vehicle to EMS incidents.

• Carries vehicle stabilization and extrication tools
• Licensed to respond to medical emergencies
• Has the ability to transport (though not licensed to transport) residents to the hospital when the EMS system is overloaded

Brush 16-1:

"Brush 16-1" is a 2007 Ford F-450 that is used to respond to natural vegetation fires, and when needed, to tow the air trailer to emergency scenes.  

• Is 4X4 for off road use
• Carries 250 gallons of water and other has a small fire pump
• Carries additional firefighting equipment specific to brush/grass fires

Utility 16-1:

"Utility 16-1" is a 2009 Chevy Tahoe that has been retired from emergency use. It is now used for general purpose use like for firefighters to attend classes out of the township, for our fire investigator when investigating fires, or other general uses.
