Parks, Preserves, and Pathways Department

Residents of Scio Township are fortunate to live in a thriving community with abundant charm and natural beauty. Scio Township green spaces are managed by the Parks, Preserves, and Pathways Director and acquired, preserved, and improved by two committees.

Land Preservation Commission (LPC) acquires land and conservation easements to ensure that there will always be working farms, active wetlands, and natural places to walk or hike in Scio.

2023

  • Sam Bandstra and Walker Whitehouse, Park Stewards, skillfully conducted trail development and maintenance, invasive species management, and facilitation of Scio Outside programs.   • Bria Sheffer and Ella Hook, Natural Resource Management Interns, conducted Breeding Bird Survey as well as an invasive species plant survey in West Scio Nature Preserve. Their research built upon the breeding bird data collected in 2021 at the West Scio Preserve by previous interns. Conducting a second breeding bird survey allows us to begin to see trends in bird populations at West Scio preserve. 2021

  • Anna Cone and James Johnson conducted both a comprehensive Breeding Bird Survey and vegetative survey at both Liberty Pond and West Scio Nature Preserve. Their final report, entitled "Scio Township Natural Features Report and Management Plan," details their findings along a land management plan for the restoration of areas where needed and strategies for eliminating non-native, invasive species.
